As the directions to dancing to Bounce music go, “Throw on a pair of shorty shorts (yes, ladies and gentlemen alike), arch your back and get on the balls of your feet, then grab something to lean on (a wall, ankles, etc.) and shake what your mama gave you!”

“Bounce” music is a hip-hop hybrid that has been around for about 20 years, and nobody delivers the goods quite like the undisputed “Queen Diva” of  Bounce music, Big Freedia. Basically, it’s rap delivered over a sampled dance beat like Big Freedia’s Rock Around the Clock which begins with a sample from the Bill Haley classic.

Make no mistake, bounce is strictly party music. But it isn’t misogynistic, which helps explain its huge popularity among women.

“Bounce music is not just connected to gay audiences because it’s been around for years before I started, and performed mostly by straight entertainers,” Big Freedia – stage name of Freddie Ross – told me when she was last in Montreal, headlining Club Soda back in August 2011.

Big Freedia has already achieved mainstream success in her hometown of New Orleans with such hit singles such as Gin in My System and her anthemic Azz Everywhere! That success also has a lot to do with the fact that Freedia performs roughly 600 shows (yes, you read right) per year, often at several venues per night where she’ll usually perform a five or six-song set at each.

“I work six nights a week back in New Orleans and when I’m on the road, I’ll often do four or five venues in one night,” Freedia says. “I’m just working hard to get my name out there.”

That positive spin on life is also one of the infectious grooves at the root of Big Freedia’s roof-raising interpretation of bounce music.

“I’m a big black guy and my mission is take this music around the world,” says Big Freedia. “I’m very protective of this music and its legacy. People everywhere are dancing to bounce music now. There is a time and season for everything, and it’s the time for bounce music.”

You know when half the audience is looking at the floor shaking their butts in the air that you aren’t at any plain old hip-hop show! Known to her legion of fans as the Queen Diva of Bounce music, Big Freedia has already ruled the stage in the 514 with live shows that became a literal booty battlefield for queers and other ass-lovers.

Freedia’s 2010 Azz Everywhere and follow-up Y’all Get Back Now catapulted her underground hip-hop sound from the New Orleans dance-hall scene to the international stage – attracting the attention of recent collaboratorsDiplo and RuPaul. A party queen with a poet’s soul, you’ll see her soon in a  feature-length documentary, Almost Famous, which was just screened at the Zurich Film Festival.

For her Montréal show, Freedia will be throwing down songs from her forthcoming album, Da Idol, which will feature the boxing-themed video and single “Step into the Ring” (as yet unreleased). “You’re gonna see a lot of versatile stuff coming from me,” she told us, adding that the new tracks rule both as spoken word and as party music. She’s called the Queen for a reason, so bend over and get to work!

Big Freedia is an accomplished “Bounce” Rapper who lives in New Orleans. She is at the forefront of this movement and has had several New Orleans hit singles such as “Gin in My System” and “Azz Everywhere!” from her albums “An Ha, Oh Yeah” (1999) and “Queen Diva” (2003). Freedia began her musical career almost 15 years ago at the Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, where she was enlisted as choir director from her Sophomore to Senior years. She sees her performance as a Bounce artist as an extension of this work, often interacting in a call and response/teacher and student, fashion with her audiences. She recently developed a musical about her life entitled “Catch That Beat” with producer Lucky Johnson. Big Freedia has always acted as mentor for many younger artists, is currently recording her third record and recently returned from a stellar 6 show run in New York City, performing sold out shows with Spank Rock, Ninjasonik and many others at venues such as Santos Party House, Glasslands, and Sway.

POMPe Takes Queer Clubbing Back Underground

When DJ JNNBNNRCK and Laura Boo first met, within Montreal’s radical queer event-organizing milieu, they realized that they had a shared nostalgia for Overdose, a former Thursday night staple at Village nightclub Parking.

“That night has been over for almost a decade and people still talk about it,” says Boo.

“They weren’t as mainstream as the weekend events, and were always a source of more current, interesting electronic music,” adds JNNBNNRCK. “It became a dream of ours to revive those nights.”

Overdose was first hosted by DJ Frigid, then by DJ Mini, in the tradition of long-running Thursday alternative nights that took place in the smaller rooms at cavernous queer clubs Sky and Unity. These events, where DJs Bobzilla, Plastik Patrik and Frigid used to spin, were some of the first club nights that I ever went to, incidentally.

Precedents for POMPe can be found even further back in the history of Montreal’s queer club realm, when the Village was essentially a string of bars and clubs in the heart of downtown (back when downtown was a cool place to go out, for gays and straights alike). When this city’s nascent punk rock scene of the late ’70s needed a licenced place to stage shows, bands and promoters began booking the gay bars — the only establishments that were fringe enough to embrace the new sound.

Given that history, it’s fitting that one particular punk rock club is giving back to gay nightlife. Though the inaugural edition of POMPe took place at Jello Bar, and subsequently held court at the indie/rental venue Espace des Arts, Katacombes has been its home for nearly a year and a half.

“It’s such an amazing bar,” says Boo. “They’re wonderful, and a great crew of people. They’re just the right amount of sketchy, but solid enough to make sure the electricity doesn’t get cut off, so it’s cool!”

TAKING THE BS OUT OF CLUBBING
When Boo turned 19 (she’s now 32), she began driving all the way to Toronto for Will Munro’s weekly Vaseline night — that’s how disconnected she felt from Montreal’s queer club scene. Eventually, local radical queer groups like the Ass Pirates began hosting events in lofts and dive bars.

“They were bizarre, they were amazing. I’d go to gay bars and feel like a schlub, and then I’d go to these parties and see people who look like me and I’d be amazed that they were gay as well.

“Later, when a lot of events started to happen in clubs outside the Village, I found that they weren’t playing the kind of music I like to listen to. I love going out and dancing to all kinds of music, but I really love indie, punk and electro. POMPe mixes in all kinds of stuff, like lately we’ve been playing this new, rough kind of queer hip hop, like Mykki Blanco.”

Having developed their skills as organizers, hosts and DJs, Boo and JNNBNNRCK launched POMPe with the intention of providing a home for their peers with different musical tastes, in a free-spirited atmosphere that’s light on drama and bullshit, as Boo puts it.

“I have a kind of ‘be nice or go home’ policy,” she says. “Club scenes are not always nice, they’re not always welcoming; clubs are about being cool, about being skinny, about being beautiful, about being fuckable. What I love about going out dancing is that it gets you away from the pressure of all that, you know what I mean? Being on the dancefloor around people you finally feel at home with is the most amazing feeling, and that’s what I want from POMPe.” ?

POMPe’s second anniversary party, with resident DJs JNNBNNRCK, Like the Wolf and Ozito, host Douche la Douche (aka Laura Boo) and performances by Jordhanna and the Diamonds, happens at Katacombes (1635 St-Laurent) tomorrow night, Thursday, Jan. 17, 11 p.m., $5
